This is the basic chocolate chip cookie I always use.  I adapt it to make many other variations and this is the one used by my son for his oatmeal cookies.

1 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup white sugar

3/4 brown sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp. baking soda

2 1/2 cups all,purpose flour

Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  Add egg and vanilla and mix well. Add the flour and baking powder and mix until just blended.  Add chocolate chips and mix in.  Drop  onto cookie sheet covered with parchment paper.  I like to use a cookie scoop.  Flatten slightly and bake at 350 F for approximately 10 .minutes  or until golden brown. Enjoy.
